Dancing to the beat of the Smoke Breakers, prominent businessmen, politicians and diplomats wined and dined at the Moscow Country Club on May 30 to celebrate a charitable golf event dedicated to International Children's Day. The President of Russia Gold Cup was initiated by former-President Boris Yeltsin and is sponsored primarily by General Motors. The tournament hoped to raise more than $70,000 this year for Operation Smile, a program dedicated to helping Russian children. "This is about charity and we believe international children's day is a worthy cause" said Chris Lacey, general director of General Motors.

Along with the event's cash donations for Russia's disadvantaged children, a year's supply of butter was graciously donated to the UK registered charity, Action for Russia's Children, by English businessmen Steve Barnett.

Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Sergeev praised the event saying, "The President of Russia Gold Cup is the spark that ignites the spirit of golf diplomacy and is a catalyst for our Junior Golfers to be Russia's good will ambassadors to the world."

With fair play ensured by chief referee and golf pro Nigel Roscoe, 88 golfers competed for the President's trophy. First place went to an international team comprising Alexander Dobrovin-sky (Russia), Roger Wills (NZ) and John Oehrlain (US).
