Talk about sleeping with the enemy! Although she's already engaged to countryman Christian Bale, Greek goddess Penelope Cruz falls for Italian soldier Nic Cage, who's leading a band of World War II troops into her neutral homeland. Cruz eventually checks out Cage's heavy artillery, but, as luck would have it, the war gets in the way and blood and guts are strewn everywhere. This cinematic take on Louis De Bernieres' 1994 book is a sweet love story set amongst the Greeks' desire to defend their homeland, a stunning location and a worthwhile history lesson that is, overall, slightly better than expected (and much better than Cage's Italian accent and Cruz's Greek accent). With that Coppola blood in him, Cage is surprisingly convincing here. Cruz, on the other hand, spends most of her screen time sobbing over the various men in her life. But the real star is Oscar-winning cinematographer John Toll, who captures the beauty of the islands better than any travel agent could. Book your flight now.
