Kay Hammer discusses how she went from being a single mother working as an assistant professor of linguistics in Austin, Texas, to cofounder, president and CEO of the successful high-tech firm Evolutionary Technologies International, Inc. Using a personal and confessional approach, this would-be Sun Tsu of the corporate world, describes her trials and tribulations as she re-invented herself and began climbing up the corporate ladder, occasionally slipping a few rungs but, with perseverance and a warrior’s acumen, finally winding up at the very top. From her experience, Hammer has drawn the conclusion that professional growth can be resolved into several stages — The Apprentice, The Warrior and The Adventurer — and invites her readers to emulate her successful progress through all three of them.

21st Century Corporate Board

by Ralph D. Ward

Hardcover — 363 pages

This book — as might be guessed from the title — concerns itself with the corporate board of the 21st century. Although the text was published in 1996, and views the 21st century as the future, it is nonetheless full of valuable insights for today’s world. The author, who is also editor of The Corporate Board magazine, analyses the changes that have taken place in the nature of the board in the contemporary era. The book explains the reasons for recent developments, such as the centralization of managerial power and forecasts its impact on the future business practices. In addition, it extends its field of discussion by identifying other changes in the way boards are structured — for instance, the increasing presence of women and minorities, at least in the West — and their impact on the way business is done.
