It's pretty obvious that new jack swing is over. R. Kelly has been arrested for molesting underage girls, Sisqo's last album flopped and Bobby Brown has been nabbed with pot for the umpteenth time. But a listen to U.K. crooner Craig David's sophomore effort, "Slicker Than Your Average," makes it clear that Craig has bought into this movement hook, line and sinker.
While his debut album, "Born To Do It," was full of funky, two-step garage tracks, albeit on the "lite" side, Craig has now abandoned his roots and gone for the $$$ with a slick sound. "Slicker Than Your Average" has more slow jams and booty calls than a Barry White album, plus a token - and sappy - Sting duet on "Rise and Fall." The new single, "What's Your Flava," even has that same strange voice-harmonica thing Tupac and Dr. Dre used in their 1996 duet "California Love."
The only semi-good song is "2 Steps Back," which harks back to Craig's good old days - which weren't that long ago - with a two-step beat. Everything else is forgettable.
