MOSCOW - The Federal Political Council of the Union of Right Forces (SPS) has sharply criticized the Russian President's proposals on changes in the procedure for governor elections, envisaging the election of governors by regional legislative assemblies.

"The cancellation of direct governor elections will not only enhance corruption but also will further widen the present gap between the people and the government, as just one person will bear full responsibility for the situation in regions, and citizens will be deprived of the right to make decisions on their own," a statement of the SPS Federal Council reads.

In the opinion of the SPS, "terrorism is just an instrument in the hands of those who are striving to reverse the development of global civilization and to establish totalitarian regimes, denying human rights and freedoms.

Therefore, any limitation of freedom and democracy would not just be a fatal mistake, voiding every achievement of the past years, but would be a concession to terrorists," the SPS pointed out.
